Had to get an ECG done recently.
Lying there on a creaky cot, with some jelly squeezed onto my chest, staring at the ceiling fan while some technician slapped rubber suction cups with metal mouth and alligator clips onto my limbs. You feel like a malfunctioning refrigerator being tested with a multimeter.
While waiting for the paper strip to spit out, I glanced down at the metal chassis of the machine. Right next to the power cord socket, stamped on a dull silver rating plate, was a little block of English text:
WARNING: EXPLOSION HAZARD. DO NOT USE IN THE PRESENCE OF FLAMMABLE ANESTHETICS.
I didn't take a photo. I don't remember the exact model either. But the phrasing stuck with me because it is deeply, quietly hilarious.
Lying half-naked with wires taped to your ribs, your brain immediately pictures the worst cartoon scenario possible: the doctor turns a dial, a relay clicks inside the plastic casing, and your chest cavity suddenly detonates like a pipe bomb, spraying grease and bone chips across the whitewashed clinic walls. Of course, the machine isn't going to turn you into shrapnel. But I wasn't sure. So as usual, start digging witht he help of search engine.
The warning is a dusty fossil from the mid-twentieth century. Back before modern non-flammable halogenated stuff like sevoflurane took over, surgical anesthesia was mostly ether, cyclopropane, and nitrous oxide mixtures. You would strap a rubber mask over a patient's mouth and saturate the room with volatile, explosive vapors that smelled like sweet rotting fruit.
In those operating theatres, one static spark from a nurse's nylon petticoat or a loose contact inside an electric rotary switch could ignite the air. If the mixture was rich enough, a spark wouldn't just light a flame; it would blow the room to pieces and rupture the patient's lungs from the inside out.
Operating rooms in the 1940s and 50s had to use conductive terrazzo floors, grounded cart wheels, and explosion-proof electrical plugs just to keep the surgeon from getting roasted while taking out an appendix.
Ether hasn't been routinely used in mainstream hospitals for fifty years. But medical device regulations are immortal. Standards committees wrote "flammable anesthetics warning" into international safety specs decades ago, and nobody on the committee ever bothered to remove the clause. So every modern ECG unit rolling off an assembly line in Shenzhen or Munich still ships with a legal warning meant for a room full of nineteenth-century ether fumes.
It is a comforting kind of absurdity.
You go to a diagnostic lab worried that your heart is giving out, and the machine monitoring your pulse is legally required to warn you about an explosion risk that died before your parents were born. Bureaucracy outliving the danger it was invented to prevent is probably the most durable thing human civilization has ever created.
